This course is designed for all personnel appointed to the role of the Ship Safety Officer under the International Safety Management Code (ISM)

The Ship Safety Officer Course is conducted in accordance with Merchant Navy Training Board course criteria.

This training is intended to meet the requirements set out in The Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations 1997 (SI 1997 No. 2962) (the Regulations) and the Code of Safe Working Practice for Merchant Seafarers (CoSWP)

Learner pre-requisites:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have obtained a minimum 12 months sea time to ensure underpinning knowledge.

In addition a safety officer must have:

  • Served at sea in a merchant vessel;
  • In addition a minimum of two years’ consecutive sea service must have been attained since the age of 18,
  • In the case of a safety officer on board a tanker, this shall include at least six months’ service in such a ship

Special Notes:

Learners or booking companies MUST ensure that one of the below forms of personal identification is available to be presented at course registration:

  • Passport
  • Discharge Book (or equivalent National document recording a person's sea service)
  • National I.D. Card
