Non-Norwegian offshore workers wishing to work in the Norwegian Sector
Non-Norwegian offshore workers wishing to work in the Norwegian Sector

From 1st January 2010, the Norwegian authorities will remove approvals from centres outside Norway. This means that no centre outside Norway can offer an approved course acceptable to the Norwegian authorities. For UK offshore workers this mainly affects the Norwegian (Pan European) Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training and its refresher.

However, North Sea Sector states have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding that will allow approved courses to be transferable across the sectors, with some limitations.

To obtain full time work in the Norwegian Sector, a full Norwegian course or refresher will be required and, from 1st January 2010 these will only be available in Norway.

To work as a contractor or temporary worker, the Norwegian authorities have agreed to accept OPITO approved BOSIET plus an extra half day of training to include training in the use of an escape chute, the Helly Hansen suit and lifesaving first aid.

The BOSIET is refreshed by the FOET which has been enhanced to include first aid and it is believed that this should be adequate for Norwegian purposes if the delegate also complete the extra half day of training include the escape chute. However, should there be any doubt or concern delegates may wish to refresh their BOSIET by repeating the course
